KING MONADA

TOP 10 SUMMER SONGS OF 2018, KING MONADA MAKES THE LIST WITH “MALWEDHE”

We are in the dying hours of November. In a few hours November will die and December will rise from its ashes. In a few weeks December itself will die and we will have the New Year.

For now, though, Mzansi is looking forward to December. Certainly so are the denizens of other parts of the world. December, the last month of the year, is also the month of reflection, the month of taking stock.

People… industries… pause and reflect on the state of being. They reflect on their journeys so far. And they make a list of their best moments, arts, moves, and whatnot.

Indeed the reflection game is playing out in South Africa’s music industry as the country takes stock of the smash hits that rocked its musical foundation and decide which among them should carry the crown.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has taken it upon itself to organize what may be called “the game of the champs” – to determine which of the smash hits released in South African within the year should be crowned “Summer Song of the Year.”

The SABC has got a Twitter account (@SABCSummerSong) dedicated to finding the summer songs of the year Already 10 songs have topped the preliminary list of Summer Songs of the Year.

In the no particular order, the songs are

  1. Banomoya by Prince Kaybee
  2. Macala by Mlindo the Vocalist
  3. Asphelelanga by Vusi Nova
  4. Bhampa by SPHEctacula and DJ Naves
  5. Happy Days by DJ Tira
  6. Zajika Izinto by Igcokama Elisha
  7. I Walk Ye Phara by DJ Maphorisa

Of all 10 songs in the preliminary list, King Monada’s “Malwedhe” seems in the world of its own as it is the only song without a feature. DJ Tira and Vusi Nova occupy prominent spots, for not only did their songs make the list, they also featured on two other songs that made the list (“Bhampa” and “Zajika Izinto” respectively).

By the way, Prince Kaybee’s “Banomoya” featured Busiswa and TNS; Mlindo the Vocalist’s “Macala” featured Sfeesih, Kwesta and Thabsie; Vusi Nova’s “Asphelelanga” featured Jessica Mbangeni and the music video featured Zahara, Ntando, and the masked and mysterious Mzekezeke.

“Bhampa” featured DJ Tita, Tipcee, Beast, and DJ Msewa; “Happy Days” featured Zanda Zakusa and Prince Bulo; “Zajika Izinto” featyred Vusi Nova; “I Walk Ye Phara” featured TDK Macassette, DJ Raybel, and Dash; “Fela in Versace” featured Kiddominant, and “Solalekseni” featured Rudeboyz.

However, these statistics may not determine the ultimate winner. But King Monada, who recently joined the lineup of Cassper Nyovest’s #FillUp Moses Mabhida  Stadium campaign, certainly stands a great chance.

The reason is simple. “Malwedhe,” which has spawned the #IdibalaChallenge, is actually the song of the moment and has spread across Mzansi, Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda, and even as far afield as China.

The smash hit has also led to King Monada receiving invitations to perform in London. Fact is, the success of “Malwedhe” was want actually provoked Cassper Nyovest’s interest and made him add King Monada to the lineup.

With one song, King monada has apparently leaped into the big leagues.

The SABC has announced that the final selection will be made on Saturday December 1. Before then, you may share your thoughts in the comment section.
